If you actually READ what I said in Item #4, you would see that I acknowledged that FL is better for retirement.

Economic Climate is iffy. Pretty much every town raised taxes this year but I know of a lot of businesses who are freezing wage increases and hiring for the coming year.

They do this because they percieve they will save money. What they fail to take into account are things like the cost of travel back to their old home to visit family and friends. Also outside of a few major cities, health care in Florida is not that good. I know people that gave up and just started coming back north for better health care because they could not find good doctors or hospitals near them. Finally I think many people are wowed by the many shiny new retirement communities and the amenities they offer.

I am dealing with some of these issues with a family member considering retirement to Florida as well. I also pointed out to them that many of these communities are just streets of double garage doors which IMHO opinion is ugly. When they took my advice and drove around the actual streets of a community they were considering they realized how ugly and barren it all really looked. Those model home complexes hide the realty of what you are buying. Jay

CT appears on nearly every list of "states you should not retire in".

No, they do this because there is no snow and cold. For retirees, retiring in FL has little to do with finances. Why do you think they come back north in the spring and return south in the fall?

shhh stop with the facts! Those lists only "perceive" that CT is a state you shouldn't retire in.

they also won't have to pay property tax if they visit family

This is nearly always because of the savings in taxes. They do not take into account things like travel costs to visit family or medical care quality. Jay

Only people with a good amount saved can do this. It is not cheap to have two homes and go back and forth each year. Jay
