Cigna sticking point is its CEO to take the reigns of anthem if bought out. If anthe.m did agree he possibly would try to move the corporate HQ to Boston which would be bad IMO. You are the buyer not the buyer and anthem CEO should stay in tact.

Huh? If Cigna is based in CT and Anthem is based in IN, why would he move the HQ to MA (instead of IN at least)?

When I worked in DT it seemed to be flourishing with people, especially at the insurance companies (2010-2013). Granted I wasn't around 1990 to see the height, but it begs the question what caused the drop? Was it the income tax in 1991 or the fact that larger companies eat up smaller companies, merge and lay off people. What caught my eye is that in the past year employment remained at the same number which means insurance companies might not be expanding.

Hopefully IF (and it's a large IF) Anthem buys Cigna no impact will happen. Anthem is based out of Indianapolis.
37% drop is alarming.

I am not in the insurance business, but what do people think about the rumors of Aetna, Cigna being targets for takeovers? Is this common and if ANY of these deals happen would it have positive or negative impact on Hartford/County?

It sounds like Anthem and UnitedHealth Group are both itching to buy more market share and companies. They are both HQ out of State, would this lead to lay offs?

More of a curious factor on my side.

From what I have read I don't think Aetna is a target to be bought. They are looking to buy after they sold off their financial services division. Cigna was in a buy or be bought situation. I have a family member who is in insurance and follows these things. I am going to ask him about it and the drop in insurance jobs. Jay

I shared this article yesterday that predicted an Aetna/Cigna merger would be bad for CT: Analyst: Aetna Acquisition Of Humana Or Cigna Is "Imminent" - Hartford Courant

It's becoming common and has been happening for a few years now. The biggest one in my opinion was Aetna and Coventry merging, and then last year Aetna bought Amerigroup. This year they bought Simply Healthcare and may be buying Cigna. I do think we'll see layoffs unfortunately. I work at one of these companies so it is a bit scary.

Also, yes there are rumors UHC may buy Aetna if Aetna can't buy either Cigna or Humana. Crazy times!

Don't forget that Aetna bought US Healthcare in 1996. I was working @ Aetna at the time. I actually don't know what became of that merger in later years since I don't follow the company and don't have contact with former coworkers @ Aetna anymore.
