Simply put, no. Shop used for your books when possible, including on Amazon and other sites. Also look at the syllabus to see which books are going to be used heavily, as opposed to simply reading one essay or article from a collection. See if those essays/articles are available online, including through your JSTOR/other academic article databases.
My son recently had to choose an elective class at a local community college to satisfy an Arts requirement. It was helpful to have the book prices and name of the book to search for used before hand. We specifically discounted the classes with multiple books and new editions - like 2014 editions. In addition to the number of books and costs, we did a search on RateYourProfessor.com for reviews on the professor and searches for previous syllabuses of the class to get an idea of what the class assignments and expectations are.
Bottom line for us, there are multiple things to look for when selecting a class and book prices are a part, but not the main factor.
