No city in 2009 is culturally as southern as it once was. People associate progress, wealth, and diversity with the South. But anyway...

I wasn't trying to rag on you or anything...sorry if it came across that way.

^^^Unfortunately, I agree.

A couple of the pictures were just trees and a waffle house anyway. The girls dressed up were obviously working at Disney. The only picture that resembles the "Old Florida" was the rebel flag and the nascar cafe, but obviously that was also a part of the tourism theme.

Spanish Moss wasnt native to Florida. It is illegal to take Spanish Moss anywhere north of S.C. and west of Florida.

Waffle House and Spanish Moss are definitely associated with the South. I don't care how many "non-southern" southern cities they are in, these things are quintessentially southern.

My post wasn't meant to start a debate with someone who takes these things too seriously. It was supposed to be slightly amusing...so lighten up.

I do think, IMO and in my experience, that Orlando is VERY southern. I live in a supposedly southern city, and it isn't nearly as traditionally southern as Orlando. Of course, the photos I posted don't prove anything. But my many visits to Orlando DO.
DeaconJ, I respect your opinion. And believe me, I wish that FL was still the old south, but it's not. 3 people (including me) all live (or lived) here in the area or close by - and we're all saying Orlando just isnt southern. Like I said, I'm a FL native and consider myself a southerner, but the area is no longer the South.

Care to correct me? Look it up instead of bickering about it on an online forum.

Spanish moss=south as Cacti=southwest.
History? No, not many. I took a few English classes though.

The girls were at Cypress Gardens...and, as I've stated three times already, the photos weren't meant to "prove" anything. But I guarantee you wouldn't see girls in hoop skirts at a theme park outside of the South.

The "just trees" are Live Oaks with Spanish Moss - a very southern U.S. sight. (and yes, Raivere, I realize that the moss isn't native to Florida...otherwise it would probably be called "Florida Moss". It obviously came from Spain - hence "Spanish")

Anyway...back on topic...

DeaconJ, what city do you live in that "isnt nearly as traditionally Southern" as Orlando was?

Besides the Nascar cafe, which is part of Disney, I'm just not sure what you see as Southern about Orlando.

Trust me, I wish it was.

Nunya. I don't tell people where I live on city-data...but Orlando is a little country town comparatively - and nothing BUT southern.

I never said that Orlando WAS southern. I said, emphatically, that Orlando IS southern.

^^^LOL. OK! I'm not going to argue anymore as people who actually live here disagree with you completely, but keep on believing that!
