A good downtown to me is defined by "would you go there if you didn't have to work there." Miami would not make my list and I haven't even visited a good chunk of the cities others have listed.
Miami Downtown for the most part is nothing but corporate buildings/city offices, chain restaurants (for the workers down there), and AmericanAirlines Arena. That's it.
Shopping - little to nothing. Just that little place by the Arena. Nothing special about it.
Nightlife - non-existant outside Miami Heat and occasional concert in arena
People living there is very minimal when compared to outside the area.
Most of the building there have cranes perched on their sides majority of the years.
What most people associate with Miami is at Miami Beach, which is not near downtown.

Yeah, I can sort of see that, except how is Chicago a gap below Philly and Boston?
