Read my giant post on the third page of this thread, and you'll see what my sources are.

Well thank you. Everyone is at least a little biased, including me, that's just human nature. But I try to remain objective and post things that are based in fact, with statistics and personal experience to back it up.

And I stand by my assertion that Philly is not the 3rd largest downtown in the US. It's one of the largest most definitely (4th? 5th?), and it eclipses most other downtowns in size/urbanity, but it's not the 3rd largest unless one includes those "expanded center city" definitions, which would basically be the equivalent of counting most of the entire northeast quarter of SF as "downtown SF". And even then, the "expanded" center city area still does not have the third highest amount of office space or highrises in the US.

Anyone would have a clue on how Downtown Brooklyn should rank?

Quit the bickering folks. Philly is #3 as far as populated downtown goes, and it is growing and improving fast. Philly is in the big leagues. The Labor Day "Budweiser Made in America" concert announced today by Jay-Z is icing on the cake... Philly will have Bruce Springsteen and Jay-Z performing at the same time (but totally different, massive venues) on a major holiday weekend. That's how big downtown Philly is now.

This subject is so ambiguous that I dont even like getting involved in the discussion. You could easily add University City's 50,000 residents, 50,000 students, 60,000 jobs as part of Center City. Which would push Philadelphias legitimate downtown population close to 150 K, 200K during college semester.

Just cause I had looked it up not too long ago...the resident population of central Chicago is up to around 100,000. It's doubled during the 2000's. Even the loop itself has gone from 17,000 to 29,000. Strange to think the density in that area is now 30,000 per square mile if you take away Grant Park, which is over 1/3 of the area.

The broader area of the North Loop, Loop, South Loop and West Loop is at around 145,000. What most people in the metro would think of as the downtown area.

I read your giant post on the 3rd page, but you only cited sources for Philly's DT population, not SF. Show some links and maybe people would stop harping on you.

Downtown Brooklyn is hard to rank since it had only 400 residents in 2000 census, and only got rezoned in 2004. It was at 12,000 residents at the 2010 census since the rezoning (adds around 1,000-2,000 people a year now), with the population density in the surrounding areas around 40,000 ppsm. However, if we look at the actual size, it is the third largest CBD in the NYC area (behind midtown and downtown Manhattan), and the new Fulton street rivals many Manhattan streets in terms of activity, since most of dt Brooklyn is commercial and retail and not residential. In terms of size, it is definitely not a top10 downtown (yet), but I wouldn't be surprised if it was in the top20.
