I think a lot of us would like this building to be taller...maybe not 20 stories...but 10 would've given it a nice, slightly more slender profile. However, I think the demand didn't warrant an extra 200,000 or so sq ft of office space. Downtown Nashville has been battling the suburban office parks for office space for a while. Lately, the suburbs have been winning...so I'll take it when we can land a nice, well done modern and efficient building.

This is also something to consider. A lot of Nashville's skyscrapers are in the 300-500 ft range, with the spires of the AT&T ("Batman") Building reaching 617 ft.
The Pinnacle is also the first (true) skyscraper built south of Broadway (in an area called "SoBro") in Nashville. While it is only 1.5 blocks from Nashville's tallest...there are very few other buildings of height around it. Currently, the only other high rise in that area is a ~220+ ft 21 story condo tower. A 260 ft Omni Hotel is currently under construction, and there is a proposal for a ~400 ft apartment tower next door, as well as some rumblings about a 40 story hotel near the new convention center. I think that at the time, a 600-700 ft tower would've looked a little out of place in that area, as it would dwarf everything around it.
The SoBro area is changing rapidly...it was primarily made up of low rise industrial and warehouse buildings...but lately it has become the target of big projects (like Pinnacle, Encore [the condo tower], the nearly $600 million convention center, the 800 room Omni Hotel, and Nashville's new symphony hall [foreground in the last photo]).
But while we are on the subject...here are a few proposals from a local developer going on in Nashville:
505 CST (Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architects)
-38 floors
-~605 feet
-700,000 sq ft office space
-200 room 5 star hotel
-1,000 space parking garage
-aiming for LEED Platinum status
-designed to lure a Fortune 500 company
The SoBro
-30 floors
-395 ft
-~250 units
-would be the tallest residential building in Tennessee

Note: both of these are proposals. Nothing has been approved, and ground has not been broken.
