Here in Washington DC most of the offices I have worked in are all work no play. Yes I know we are being paid to work but how about a little down time and conversation between coworkers?

I travel on the job as a professional trainer and get a chance to see the social culture in workplaces all over America and notice each town is different in how the workplace and your fellow employees are viewed. There also seems to be a vast difference between the expectations towards friendships and casual conversation in the workplace depending on the town.

So...What City's work culture is the most laid back?

SF/Bay Area, Seattle, San Diego, and Denver all have pretty laid-back and chilled work cultures.

This might surprise some folks.

To find which cities are all work and no play, we measured how many residents punch the clock (U.S. Census) and the amount of overtime logged (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). We then considered commute times (U.S. Census) and rates of high blood pressure and self-reported stress (CDC). Finally, we calculated how many vacation days go unused, as well as peoples' stress levels when they finally do escape (Expedia.com). In the end, Manchester worked its way to the top of our list.

Most Workaholic Cities
1 Manchester, NH F
2 San Francisco, CA F

Surprising. Link seems to be broken though.

It depends on your job or field.

Interesting list though on overtime hours logged; not sure that is able to discerned by salaried employees

Interesting.

People perceive California was always a "laid back" state but it seems that they have 2 cities on both ends of the spectrum. SF being the most workaholic and SD being the least workaholic. But like I mentioned earlier, it depends on your job and/or field.

I would think that the southern cities are more laid back at work because people are more chatty, am I wrong?

I'm shocked that Dallas isn't on that list.
