Here's some Toronto exposure. They're not murals though. Are mural's even graffiti?
1970/80's original graffiti in the bronx started with throw ups, did they not?
i'm a purist i guess and prefer my graffiti to be illegal.
anyway, it started out as tags, progressed into throwups and i guess the first "pieces" although i dunno what you'd call them and then developed into what we refer to today as pieces.
if you ever look at graffiti on the trains prior to about...75/76, you'll see what i mean. here's an example:
People who are saying NYC, just don't know anything about the culture.
Philly is the graffiti king, hands down.
For generations the best graffiti artists worldwide have held it down in the city of brotherly love.
this is bull ****.
i respect philly artists for starting what we know as graffiti...
but with all due respect, ny created most of the styles, had the best artists, has artists that are better known, worldwide, is responsible for what was known as the graffiti movement, is responsible for graffiti on trains as we know it, worldwide, is responsible for graffiti being tied to hip hop, is responsible for introducing it to the world, is responsible for graffiti going from street **** to fine art, is responsible for the boom of artists going from writers to entrepreneurs, and i could go on and on.
so anybody saying philly is full of it.
you can't even name 10 philly artists ppl would recognize. off the top, ny:
cope 2 (been in video games)
espo (had a nike shoe collected worldwide)
stash (had a nike shoe, released worldwide)
futura (had a nike shoe, has a clothing line, collaborated with bape)
krs one (famous rapper)
dez (aka dj kay slay)
JA (is EVERYWHERE, in various movies because of his dad and just because he's extra prolific)
cap (the writer pretty much the blueprint for the scene as it is today, IMO...meaning mostly bombs. quantity over quality. get up everywhere on whatever mentality.)
lee responsible for the street artist to fine art movement.
zephyr (responsible for the wild style logo and was damn near copied by any and everybody IMO in the early stages when graffiti as we know it left these shores and went overseas)
The only things those latter pics are missing is a crackhead and bum begging for change. No thanks.
