I'll start out by saying, graffing without permission is considered vandalism.

While we all have ideas of where it is ok, and where it isn't. We can all agree that many artists have left amazing pieces in the city.

My perspective is that it is ok in an old tunnel, concrete drainage ditches(such as the L.A. river, ugly without anything on it anyway), alleyways that only crackheads would go in, and abandoned places.

Anything on private property should be taboo. Gives everyone a bad name.

IMO, throughout history, graffiti has always been apart of city life.

Unfortunately not all "writers" value art. Such as tag bangers of the 90's. Which was more destructive than anything else.

Yeah, I heard when anthropologists discovered the ancient cities of Egypt, they found tagging on the side of the walls.

Oh, and I remember this one time in Oliver Twist, I saw Oliver tag "EXS3 L-TOWN" on the side of the building with his little chums.

There's a DIFFERENCE between graffiti and murals. Murals can be fine if they are maintained correctly, but most aren't and it starts peeling within 5 years, making the wall or concrete surface look uglier than it was before there was anything on it.

Tagging definitely is NOT constructive, nor does it improve the look of anything. There were plenty of tagger sets where I grew up, and seeing that stuff was annoying, especially if you were someone like me doing court-ordered community service having to paint over the same wall over and over again.

Any European city (Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Krakow). The European artists are so far more advanced at this point it's ridiculous.

I thought about asking the how I can do a mural in my neighborhood but I have a feeling it would be ruined by the gangs here. Every other week we get a whole new set of "TVR" put everywhere in the neighborhood. After the raids, the gangs laid low. so I'm guessing these are wannabe kids. This past week they covered alot of spots.

Dallas' Deep Ellum was pretty awesome before they tore down the tunnel to make way for the new light rail line.

Well, its not hard to get a permit from the city provided you provide a conceptual rendition of what you want to paint. Not that I would know, but I've had friends who've done it.

If you just do it without a permit, the city will paint it over and assume its tagging.

However, anything you paint will probably get tagged over by some 14 year old kids who think they're cool because they know how to use aerosol cans.

There's a lot of murals and awesome pieces in all over the city, but since most are off the main roads (meaning people would actually have to trek into Detroit), I don't think too many people see them. Sorta sad almost.

I will tell you who has the worst graffiti....Phoenix. It is just a bunch of dumbass hispanic kids scribbling the crap on signs. It looks awful. I like to check out GOOD graffiti but the garbage in PHX is a slap in the face to anyone with talent
