Thanks Verruckt! I did use one of those companies. The apt is kind of cappy and their contracts did say a lot of stuff about charging for this and that minute details.

Anyone know if it's safe to walk along W McMillian? I noticed not a lot of people live here yet since undergrads don't start till Sept?

I will be Joining UC in this Fall (2012). Could someone here please help me with some areas which are safe, and also inexpensive. Me and my friend would like to spend around 400$-450$ (combined). Any suggestions. I would be studying in College of Business. I dont mind walking 15-20 mins.

Anywhere near

would be great.

If it's within walking distance, it would even be better so I don't have to drive my car across from america.

thanks for your help!
I resided at 2810 Stratford Ave. for a couple years. This is the north end of Stratford Avenue colloquially referred to as "short Strat" by the students (good to know when you hear of a house party on Stratford). This building is a block off of campus, has an off-street garage, and is in a safe, quiet area by urban university standards. The building is a series of 4 one bedroom apartments with on-site coin laundry and secured storage in the basement. You'll notice small character details of its 1910 construction like lots of built-ins such as the milkman drop off in the kitchen, an old hand-base phone stand, and a cedar chiffarobe in the hall.

If it's the same property owner his name is Roy T Skaggs and his rental company is RTS & Assoc. I have no affiliation other than renting from him for a couple years but he seemed like a competent property manager who maintained his properties well. When I had a running toilet he was out within an hour to fix it. Other than that I never had an issue.

The major drawback was price. I think he was asking $525 and we settled on $500/month as the unit was vacant one week before the Autumn quarter start of the school year and he was likely desperate. This was 8 or 9 years ago so rent may be a little more now but with off-street parking and the on-site amenities it seemed reasonable back then.
