Working at Miami U. living in Cincinnati (Hamilton, Fairfield: apartments, rent)

I am interviewing at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio for a faculty position and want to live near Cincinnati. I am a single mom and have a very bright 13 year old. We like old and historic homes (duplex is fine-approx $1,000/month rent), but the school district is the most important. What are some recommendations from this wise group and how long will it take to get to Oxford from your suggestions?

...and right next door to Wyoming is Glendale, with historical homes (and apartments) which rent within your range, and is in the Princeton City School district, which caters very well to higher performing students. Princeton has the International Baccalaureate.

You dont mind a 40-50 minute commute everyday? I would live closer to my job.

Fairfield is a quicker drive than Wyoming, Ross is close too. Oxford is not far from Cincy but not close either. There are areas where there are older homes in those areas. If you google Oxford just zoom in and look at areas close to the campus. There are websites that will give you an idea about the schools.

Wyoming is a nice area but if you are a simgle parent you might want to be closer to where your child attends school. Also in the case where it snows it may take a LONG time to get home if you live closer to Cincy.

Thanks for all the advice, I really appreciate it. One more question if I may: what is the diversity like in the areas you mention (Ross, Oxford, Fairfield)? My daughter is Asian. I appreciate your feedback.

Talawanda schools (Oxford) are about 93-95% white. Ross schools are about 97-98% white. Fairfield Schools are around 80% white with decent sized hispanic and asian populations to go with a solid black population. Two districts already mentioned, Wyoming and Princeton, are about 80% white (15% black 5% other) and 40% white (50% black 10% asian/hispanic/mixed).

Wyoming or Fairfield. I used to live in Fairfield..Wyoming is nice too. I wouldn't want to drive to Oxford from Wyoming though.

Hamilton is just 15 or so minutes from the Oxford campus. A really nice neighborhood in Hamilton is Highland Park - located on the city's west side - it's walkable, loaded with big trees and a number of small parks, plus a real variety of housing types.
