Honestly though, I don't see what's wrong with Nippert.

American Football teams in Europe and Japanese Baseball teams use 'American-style' names for their sports teams as well. It is the convention and tradition of the sport.

Although I admit that Real Salt Lake is a bit contrived considering Real (Engl: Royal) is a Spanish word, while Salt Lake is English and in an English speaking/heritage city. A hypothetical Real Los Angeles would be less dissonant.

What I really find annoying is when people write (or worse, pronounce in speech) fùtbol when otherwise speaking English. The name of the sport in the US is soccer or football. If you want to be sure you are not confusing the reader or listener by saying football, just say soccer. That will only annoy the English who, ironically, coined the term.

I agree that there may be traditions to give new teams the "flavor" of a country's original teams but I think the MLS teams do it with blatant ignorance. So what if American Football teams in Europe are called Newcastle Falcons. It's stupid though to give a soccer team the name "United" when there was no uniting in the first place. Real Madrid was given their name because they were the Royal (Real) team of Madrid. I'm not aware of any King in Utah.

My main beef with FC Cincinnati is that it just sounds stupid from play-by-play announcers. Watching the game on TV is excruciating. Say FC Cincinnati fast 5 times! Ha ha. How many Chelsea fans refer to their team as Chelsea FC? Or Barecelona fans that say FC Barcelona? None.

IMO Philidelphia Union has the best name that is original but still having the flavor of a European team.

Update:

-Season Tickets are over 9,000 this year with less than 300 remaining for The Bailey (where my season tix are).

-Article in todays paper about the locales for the future stadium. Seems like Oakley is most likely. I personally would love the location. Probably be $6 uber ride from my house to the stadium or a pregame party at Mad Tree 2.0
Where could FC Cincinnati build a new stadium?

Judging by reader comments from the Enquirer and a few other websites, Oakley sure looks like the standout alternative to Nippert, not necessarily for its location so much as it will fulfill MLS requirements concerning stadium ownership. Needless to say, FC Cincinnati needs to resolve this important matter ASAP. Like yourself, I would be delighted if pro soccer did move to Oakley Station because of its central location adjoining both I-71 and a sizable soccer fan base.

Concerning any possible FC relocation from Nippert,
a hard hitting article from Paul Daugherty of the Enquirer:
* Doc: The real cost of an FC Cincinnati stadium
