How do you interpret this?
If you parents offer a sincere 'word of advice', it would be smart to ponder, maybe even respect, what thoughts they offer as they may keep you from expeiencing similar 'pitfalls'.

I was thinking about the promise "that thy days may be long..." Do you believe that if you honor your parents, you are promised a long life?

I don't know about a long life, but I've known several people I used to go to school with, who didn't honor their father and mother. Quite a few of them died in their 40's and 50's....
I would take that scripture as a warning: do as it says: honor your father and mother...

It's just from the Ten Commandments -- Exodus 20. (It's a short chapter.) There really isn't anything in the context that I think is all that helpful. It does sound like a promise is being made contingent upon obedience to a commandment.
greatest force in my life. not much on obligations to kids except discipline but to parents you owe plenty and most dont pay the tab in fact run up enormous bill. we did not like the way our grandparents did family, so we did our own version, we have failed.
That children must be first and foremost obedient to their parents as well as authority as this is a child's responsibility to do what they are told. When in a household where there is a love for the Lord, this love transcends down from the parents to the children as this makes for a harmonious and prosperous household unto God.
