I agree in part, Mystic.
I think swearing using the Lord's name IS using it in vain.
But I agree: so too is using it without purpose.
Though, I think it's used as a figure of speech - rather than an actual prayer to intervene in the trivial.
Like deerdog, it bothers me to hear Christians exclaim, "Oh L__d!" or OG, and especially OMG.
...Even expressions like "sweet J____!"
I agree. I don't know why, but to hear the term "OMG" really bothers me too...I guess maybe because most who say it are so flippant...God is the furthest thing from their mind...
When it comes it calling God's name in vain, I will say we are all guilty. I try to make a conscious effort not to do it as well. when you think about it, it's rather silly. Just imagine people calling your name whenever something bad happens to them. It just makes no sense. To make it worse, it is not pleasing to God at all. He specifically warns against it. The devil is a liar, I bet it is his scheme.
I vividly remember my mom using all of the words mentioned here. One you may not have heard, but I grew up with was when she would say, "Oh, Jesus, Mary and Joseph"! She got the entire holy family in one profanity! Still don't understand that one.
Is it okay for agnostic/atheists to use GD or OMG?? I say this because I am agnostic and I catch myself saying OMG or GD more often than I would like to admit. But should I not do it b/c it could offend Christians or should I not do it because I do not believe in god?? My personal feeling is that the words have become part of common language and have lost their religious meanings. at least in my book.
QUOTE=deerdog;7422190]I hear a lot of Christians that say things like G**, J****, JC, L***, and OMG and it really bothers me knowing them personally and knowing they are Godly people but still say things like that. I just wander if it really ever occurred to them that they really are taking the Lords name in vain.

If they are saying these things they are not "godly, but rather ungodly"
You can be a carnal Christian and they are the ungodly

They have indeed become part of the common language, but they haven't lost meaning to God.
It's just best left unsaid, if simply because it IS common. (base)
'Hardly an endearing trait.
Personally, I'm become somewhat less offended hearing such common expressions from unbelievers.
However, breaking this one Commandment will be the least of their worries and THAT saddens me.
