There absolutely are certain things you must believe about Jesus. You must believe that he died for your sins and that he rose again (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Jesus himself said that if you don't 'believe that I am you will die in your sins' (John 8:24).
While the English word 'on' is a valid way to say it, it is not the only way. The preposition εἰς is used to express the meaning of 'in, into, to, for.' 'Believe in Christ' is perfectly valid and is usually the way it is translated in English Bibles. It doesn't mean to believe that he existed, but has reference to his redemptive work on the cross.

In Scripture I find two (2) persons that had a direct relationship with God ( one-on-one basis )
Adam talked directly to his God ( No angelic involvement needed ) because in the beginning Adam was sinless.
God sent a pre-human heavenly sinless Jesus to Earth for us. Sinless Jesus could talk directly to his God.
Thus, God allows Jesus to be mediator for us.- 1st Timothy 2:5
By the end of Jesus' 1,000-year rule over Earth mankind will have reached human perfection as Adam originally had.
So, by that time mankind will have a one-on-one with God as Adam originally did.
In the meantime, we pray to God through Jesus as mediator for us.

I find a little different take according to 1st Corinthians 2:16 we can have the mind of Christ but who can have God's mind.
Be like minded according to Christ Jesus - Romans 15:5
For we are Christ's and Christ is God as per 1st Corinthians 3:23.

The error is yours. The phrase 'the (W)word of God is not used of Jesus only. It refers to the teaching of the apostles as well. And the Old Testament is just as much the word of God as is the New Testament.
