In the 2000 Census Chicago was 26% Hispanic of any race/origin. They didn't care if they identified as Caucasian. Anyway, the population will be over 3,000,000 this Census. I'm going to guess 3,100,000. It should drop again though considering all the gentrification that's going on.

Default Chicago's negative population growth...any thoughts?

Hi everyone,

I was hoping for some feedback on why you think Chicago is showing a negative population growth. I got this information

I'm sure it is a lot of things but was curious for your input. For example: loss of jobs, crime, weather, taxes etc...

Side-note: I'm in the process of reading as many old threads as I can and if you think this topic has already been covered.. I apologize and will get to it.

Thank you,

The corruption, crime, general happiness (or lack there of) of its citizens, weather, etc. all play a part. Not to mention...the highest sales tax in America. What does Chicago offer that other places don't? Nothing really other than the fact that it is Chicago. I plan to leave the city within the next 2 years. If the FEDS were able to get a hold of the corruption, I'm sure people would be happy to move to the city of Chicago because there would be a domino effect when it comes to things like crime and taxes.

I thought it was growing again. Can't remember though.

However, I would say it would be lack of job growth, weather and families moving to the burbs when they have kids. Taxes could be an issue but honestly I didn't think they were that bad. It seems less than the mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

No one knows if Chicago is losing or gaining population. Everyone predicted Chicago would lose population between 1990 and 2000, but the actual 2000 census enumeration showed a gain in population for Chicago. We'll have to wait till after the 2010 census enumeration to get good data on Chicago's population. Until then, everyone is such guessing.

Default Props to Chicago

I wanted to say as a person who is hoping to move to Chicago from a city with an insanely positive population growth (Charlotte). Chicago is a great city and everyone I know that is from there or ever been there has said what a great city it is.

I know people who moved away and moved back within a few years and vowed never to leave again.

I don't make all my decisions based on statisics. I know they can be relative. That is why I was hoping to get feedback from people that live there or have lived there.

I was actually suprised by the negative pop growth number myself. I thought maybe becauase of the cold. Remember the part in Torch song trilogy when the mothers from new york says. (forgive me if I misquote this but you'll get the idea).

"That's what our people do, we get old and then we die. Until then, we move to florida. Here in Charlotte, we have a ton of transplants from the New York area. They say it's the weather and the high cost of living.

Go live in some tank town like Lexington Ky for a couple of years, you'll find the difference is profound. Chicago is well worth the cost to me.

The City of Chicago itself may or may not be losing population - for all intents and purposes it's relatively stable right now - but it's not in dispute that the Chicago REGION is gaining people.

Chicagoland has never stopped growing.
