I live in the 60621 area code and was wondering if Comcast is my only choice when it comes to cable. We would like to find a suitable alternative. I did a search and saw some people on here use RCN but it's not available in my area nor AT&T UVerse sadly. Are there any other options for my area?

Dish network is cheap, DirectTV is a bit more but both satellite services have a wide array of HD channels and a variety of premium service packages you can add (like NFL Sunday Ticket, HBO/Starz packages). Your service will be in and out though during snow storms and thunder storms with heavy winds.

I'm not sure if either service offers a DVR option as I had them many moons ago before Tivo was the bees knees.

DirecTV has a DVR available.

DirectTV has a DVR as well as "real" TiVO, and they are supposed to add real TiVO to HD someday.

DishNetwork has similar options.

The better antenna and LNBs of today's satellites maintain excellent signal in all but the most fierce of thunderstorms -- snowstorms and normal rain are not a problem.

I had the same dilema when I was there. I hated the way I was treated by Comcast, so I went with RCN. The people were great, but RCN is a failing company with outdated equipment. I would look into DirectTV or DishNetwork if I were you. It's a shame about AT&T Uverse. I currently have that where I am now and absolutely love it.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I looked over the sites for both and I should be happy with either. The price range is perfect.

is RCN really failing? I recall them being fairly popular in MA in the areas they serviced. I had them and loved them and wish they'd hurry up and set up service in my area! can't stand Comcast and AT&T is starting to annoy me already
