Young
Urban
Professional

It is not so much "total earnings" as life style -- back when the term first appeared it meant some one with a White Collar type job, with college degree, ability to "move up" in a firm/career field. Live in a city / urbanized area. Socialize with people very similar to one's self. Spend a large portion of income on material goods that were quite visible, from clothing/jewerly, to automobile, pets, home, and even trips/travel that would provide for bragging around other yuppies.

You could probably be sort of a "bargin yuppie" living hand-mouth at about $50K/year in Chicago, but the 'core' is probably another 45% higher than that, and yuppie nirvana doesn't really kick into until your are making six-figures and consuming pretty much all of it...

I think if you take a stroll in either gold coast or lincoln park, you will see lots of them (of course they exist in other parts of the city too, but GC and LP have a higher concentration). I agree that it is more of a life style than anything else, however, you do need the money to support a Young Urban Professional lifestyle. City-data does a good job in describing their income level: the average income per capita for residents of the aforementioned two neighborhoods is $120,000. Many of them are young, wealthy, fashion-conscious. Only in those two neighborhoods can you find such upscale retailers like Neiman Marcus, Barneys, or Saks. In those areas BMWs are more common than Toyotas, Gourmet food is valued more than chain restaurants (Morton's being an exception).
