I'm looking to spend some time in Chicago this Summer and am considering an apt near Lake Shore and Addison.

Anything I should know about the area???

Also, I'll be working near Addison and California - which is about 2 or so miles West. How is Addison during rush hour?

THANKS!!

Anything you need to know about Addison and Lake Shore can be found by going to the first thread in this form and looking at information about Lakeview and particularly Boystown.

Addison is slow during rush hour, especially evening rush hour when there's a Cubs night game. It can easily take you over 30 minutes to get from Addison and California during a night game. Otherwise, bet on 20, maybe 30 if you're taking a bus.

Take the bus to and from work for sure if you decide to move there.

We used to live in an apartment at PineGrove and Addison. It was a great neighborhood. A Jewel grocery store is about a block away and there's some decent restaurants in the area. The Red Line is about a 10 minute walk from that area, or there's lots of busses on Lake Shore Drive. If you do decide to live there, you can take the Addison bus to work. I wouldn't drive if you didn't need to.

Lake Shore and Addison is a great location. The neighborhood is young and energetic (although folks of all ages are present). You can walk in minutes to 3 great groceries: Whole Foods (Halsted St just north of Addison), Jewel (Broadway just south of Addison), and Treasure Island (Broadway/Cornelia). Also, there are many restaurants and shops up and down Broadway (especially from Addison south as far as you would care to walk). You can walk down to the Border's at Broadway and Diversey in about 15 minutes time.

There is an underground walkway to reach the park and Lake Michigan shoreline. The tunnel is about 20 feet north of Addison on Lake Shore (inner, local portion) which takes you under the Lake Shore Drive expressway and into the park. It is great access to all the bike and running paths up and down the lakefront.

During rush hour, the Addison bus takes about 25 minutes from Lake Shore to the Blue Line at the Kennedy Expressway/I-90 (that's the stop I am most familiar with and it takes you on to O'Hare). You didn't ask about that but may come in handy if you ever go to the airport.

I find this area very safe and fun. Lots of folks out walking dogs in the evening, etc. Really great in summer. Enjoy.

great location if you are young and want to be in the middle of the action. As someone mentioned above, this location is part of boystown and as such is the center of gay life, also its close to wrigleyfield, so be ready to run into lots and lots of sports freaks, frat bois, cub fans, drunkards, etc etc. and this is probably the only neighborhood where restaurant servers wear $200 diesel jeans, and $500 prada shoes to wait on you, and some do come with an attitude. I'd advise against going to a restaurant where the servers are dressed better than you are in general.

Maybe in your book. For us boystown regulars, lakeshore and addison is part of boystown. Its 3 blocks from LBC, Cell Block, Leather sport, and all that boystown has to offer. Boystown is defined as

belmont to the south (gay bars/clubs such as spin, horseshoe)
lake michigan to the east
sheffield to the west (berlin etc)
irving park to the north

Only this definition can cover most of the gay establishments, which are part of boystown
