Probably just some issue with the turnstiles at the station. How recently had you used the pass? If you'd used it within the last 15 min or so, you can't use it again, to prevent passbacks (I forget the exact timeframe).

I know that when you take the red line, getting on the red line train marked 95/Dan Ryan means you're going southbound and getting on the train marked Howard means you're going northbound. But what about the brown line? Is it marked differently?
Out of curiousity, what do you mean by taking the brown line counterclockwise? You mean taking it outbound (away from the loop)?

Yes. Especially when the old system was perfectly sensible and gave actual information on the nature of the service. The color thing differentiates between lines but tells you nothing of their nature.

What did the machine say when you put the card in?

Color-coding rail transit lines is pretty much a world-wide standard. It makes interpreting system maps a lot easier.

Not sure if I am remembering this correctly but something along the lines of "Use Face card value". or something like that.

I've had it happen to me occasionally. If you flag a CTA employee down, and explain what happened, they'll let you through.

By the way, you should be able to 'pass back' your chicago card even if you have a monthly account, it is supposed to simply charge those additional fares at 1.75. However, I've noticed some of the elevated stations in the loop don't allow this to happen.

Yeah, the Brown Line only runs in one direction, and that's counter-clockwise. It goes South to the Loop, around the Loop, and then back North along the same route. If it says "Loop", it's going to the Loop. If it says "Kimball", it's going North. I couldn't be any simpler.

Don't worry, you'll probably have most of it figured out by the end of the week.

So I take it you're uttlerly baffled by the destination signs that say things like "Howard" and "Loop" and "95th/Dan Ryan" and "Midway" and "54/Cermack" and "Harlem" and things like that?
