Actually if you currently work for a municipality or other unit of government (which what virtually MPA grads do...) it would be foolish NOT to give top consideration to NIU -- Dekalb is far away the best program in the area.

I know nothing about MPA programs specifically, but I would never choose a for-profit school like DeVry (or University of Phoenix, etc.) over any well-established traditional "real" university for any field of study.

What about the MPP at University of Chicago's Harris School? At least in City government, that seems to hold a lot of influence.

I got my MPA at UIC and was happy with the program. They have a very good staff with qualified adjunct professors as well. It's a relatively new program (less than 15 years old I think?), and I got a full-time job less than four months after completing my degree.

NIU is also very highly ranked. I work or associate with lots of people who got their MPAs from NIU. Only thing, it's a haul unless you live in the far western suburbs.

Both UIC's and NIU's programs were ranked in the top 10 for city management and urban policy by US News & World Report last year: Best City Management and Urban Policy Programs | Top Public Affairs Schools | US News Best Graduate Schools

If you wanna talk about UIC's program, Sara, just PM me. Happy to discuss. Good luck!
