Chicago uses alot of chemicals including chlorine.

You are not nuts at all. I cannot get over the odor in the water, and it is all over the city. I live in Lakeview but the water has the same smell where I work in OakBrook. It actually is so strong I am not drinking it. I moved here about 2 years ago and this is the 3rd time or so I have smelled it like this...in cycles I guess. I ask others and they think I'm nuts. I knew I wasn't the most sensitive person to smells. I find it hard to believe that people from here are so conditioned to this odor. I can smell it immediatley especially entering a bathroom or kitchen. I further don't believe it isn't harmful in some way. Even the restaurants serve it and think it is ok.

I mean this is the 3rd largest city in America and they can't even deliver clean water????

THANKYOU!!!! I love you.

I haven't smelled it like this in a while...and before in the past it was more of a sulfury smell mixed with chlorine. But this time it's pretty obvious it's a bit different. A little more pungeant and moldy . I'm getting a filter soon.

As more restaurants turn away from bottled water because of its impact on the environment, Chicago's good old faucet juice is coming back into vogue. So much so that local vegan restaurant The Balanced Kitchen (6263 N McCormick Blvd.; 773-463-1085) hosted a water tasting this morning pitting Chicago's own tap water against Dasani, Ice Mountain and Aquafina.

I stopped by the tasting and was the first to do the blind test. I judged each cup of water (A to D) on clarity, nose, body, taste and finish. Three tasted slightly sweet, bland and round but one had a slight mineral flavor, a thinner body and a clean refreshing finish. It was cup C. I told the tasting organizer and held my breath for the answer and I swear to Mayor Daley, it was good Chicago sink juice. Woohoo!

Thought this was weird! I sure don't agree!

hmmm, my posst seems to have disappeared.
I live and work in Oak Park. For the past week or so the water at both my apartment and my office has smelled terrible; a very strong skunk smell. I looked at the Oak park Village website to see if there was any info. It says that they clean the water mains every spring. Maybe they're doing it now? I don't know. I left a message for the water and sewer rep for the village and will post when I get a response. And, I'm concerned that, even if there is a problem, they wouldn't admit it.

They are starting to do the same thing in Houston.

Call me paranoid but I don’t drink tap water ever. I know it’s harmless but it's just an aversion I can’t get over. Kind of like large masses of water.

However, I think that is great they are doing away with the bottled water in restaurants. It doesn’t bother me anyways since I usually order Pellegrino. I know some restaurants would serve their tap water in water bottles and charge the customers.
I’m pretty sure Aquafina is bottled tap water.
Hey at least it’s not well water! Now that is repulsive!

In fact, tap water is safer than bottled water because it is well regulated (and the state and local level) and tested constantly. Some regions have a bit of leniency regarding the amounts of fluoride they are allowed to add, so that may concern some, but Chicagoland water is among the best in the nation.

I tend to avoid tap water though I don't necessarily shun it. I am uncomfortable with the mix of drugs added to municpal drinking water. Not all have been thoroughly tested for long term side effects. There is profit for big pharma in public drinking water and that is enough for me to question it.
