Does anyone know what that smell is and where it's coming from? It's near The Kerryman and the Chinese Embassy, and has been there for years. Thanks.

I'm actually 90% sure it's Portillo's.

And I HATE it. I like the food at Portillo's, and I don't mind food smells from restaurants in general - it's just part of living in the city, but the thick, greasy, burning stench that they pollute downtown with is just gross. if they were a factory, they'd be in violation of EPA rules I'm sure, but being a restaurant they're not subject to the same criteria.

Los Angeles is actually exploring air quality criteria for burger joints, it's such a problem there. There is medical evidence that carbonized food can increase the chances of colon cancer, so I find it hard to believe that carbonized grease smoke wouldn't contribute to lung cancer risk.

I don't know.

The one time I was in Fogo de Cao they took us back and showed us about 10 giant open-fire ovens.

I assumed the smell was from a fire at the Chinese embassy, the empty hotel across the street, or some place nearby, but wondered how in the world it could last so long. Your answers make sense, so now we have some suspects! Thanks, guys.
