Chicago is a racist city and has more segregtion than any other place I've lived. Blacks move in and whites move out, it has been that way since I grew up in Chicago in the 60's. Now all the blacks are displaced in the south suburbs (some by choice some because of politics) and all the whites are coming back to the city where they wouldn't have been found dead back in the 60's. Now explain that you liberal minded white Chicagoans!!

I bet the Atlanta area is not segregated at all.

It's called urban dynamics. Or sociology. Or business. Any number of things. What remedy do you suggest? I'd imagine you have none.

Isn't this thread ripe for closing?

I Have Black And White Friends. If I Got Into With Blacks My Black Friends Would Have My Back. If My Black Friends Got Into It With Some Whites Me And My White Friends Would Have There Backs. Im From Minneapolis And Theres Racism Here But Way Less Then Chicago. Racism Is For Losers Its Stupid. God Put Differant Races On This Earth To See What Kind Of People We Would Become. America Is More Diverse Then Any Country. We Have A Little Bit Of Everybody And Thats Why We Are The Dominate Country In The World. I Hope Someday People Will Just Open There Eyes And See That Life Is To Short For Stupid ****.

Where else have you lived that's less racist than Chicago? When you look at the data, most of the northern industrial cities are pretty segregated residentially. Pretty much any older urban area with a substantial black population is mostly residentially segregated, and New York City actually has a higher segregation index than Chicago! Do you call New York a racist town? It's honestly about the same, in my experience.

I know that there's racism in Chicago. I'm not naive about that, though I don't see it among the people I socialize or work with. But Chicago is a lot like the rest of urban American when it comes to racisim, and I don't think it's fair to single us out as somehow being worse. In fact, most people in Chicago support a black candidate for President of the United States... That hardly seems like something that would happen in an overtly racist part of the country, doesn't it?

Well the city is 36 percent black, a traditional rank and file democratic strong hold, and the home state of Senator Obama. None the less I digress

Sure, but the city is 64 percent white and Clinton was born in the area, so I think the point is if this city were so painfully racist as some seem to believe, then he wouldn't have won, or at least by no where near the margin he has.

I know Chicago is VERY segregated, and it stems from a racist past - but honestly I don't really see much outright racism these days from the residents. People tend to just stick to their neighborhoods and only really interact downtown. I don't see many white people who are outright racists and talking crap about people. No one in Chicago tends to care much about anyone else - just what's happening in their neighborhood.

Maybe it's because I hang out with a lot of gay people, but my group of friends I hang out with on the weekends is roughly made up of (trying to think now....) 3 Asians, 8-10 white guys, 5 hispanics and maybe 8 black guys. It's almost comical how diverse the group is, and we always joke around with racist comments and jabs at people. It's all in good fun though, and everyone gives it as much as they take it - no one is actually offended at anything. Of the 10 people I hang out with the most, 5 of them are either black or hispanic, it's just a non issue.

I'm sure it totally depends on who you are and where you live in the city - but my personal experience is a very integrated group. I'm guessing that might just be cause I hang out with gay guys though, who tend to be a little more open minded about things since they have bigger issues to deal with.

The biggest racist I've ever known was my aunt, who's a lesbian. I always thought she would be open-minded as well, but I guess not.

But back on topic- I think racism exists, I doubt any one would debate that, but it's prevalence probably heavily depends on where you spend most of your time in the city and what socioeconomic group you fall into.
