Racist, insular, unenlightened and provincial.

I kid.

The city is home to over 2MILL people -- personalities with differ greatly, but if I had to speak about an overall personality I'd say "too self-depreciating that at times it becomes a detriment." As one transplant said to me "Chicago should be boasting the good it has," and this was someone who makes her living making movies and is aware what LA and NYC offers.

Sports. Domestic beer. Nasally. Loud. Busy. Sarcastic. Drunk. Corrupt (politicians, cops). East Coast meets rust belt. Ancestors too lazy to finish the Oregon trail.

I don't think there is a "Chicago" personality.

I think most large cities, even medium sized cities are really best understood in terms of specific neighborhood/community clusters personality. One can even also suggest personalities that are divided somewhat along ethnic lines. (Italian american, Jewish american, WASP american, Black american, etc., etc.)

Those stereotype maps of cities? As silly or as debatable as they are much more accurate than one personality type that fits a whole city.

Hipster neighborhoods generally have a similar personality to hipster neighborhoods in other cities, white ethnic working class neighborhoods same thing. Black neighborhoods in Chicago are going to have more in common with Black neighborhoods in Philly, Detroit, or Baltimore than with white neighborhoods in Chicago. College-oriented neighborhoods same thing.

I think you mean "deprecating", not "depreciating". I don't think that the Chicago personality loses value once it's taken out for a spin...

Could also be written this way:

"Ancestors tough and smart enough to make it in an area already occupied and not so incompetent they had to go where they had no competition."

They made it past the East Coast, and settled in one of the most fertile areas in the world. Like most people, they didn't press on to discover the emptiness of present-day Wyoming and Utah. Good call.
