How Chicago has reduced homicides. New York's approach sounds similar. Check the video.

That "Murder Capital" stuff from a few years ago was a bunch of B.S. Chicago did have the largest total number of murders that year, but we weren't even close to the top when you adjusted the number for population. What it did tell us is that New York and Los Angeles, the only two cities larger than Chicago in terms of population, were doing a better job reducing murders. But we all knew that anyway.

Obviously this is good news. I'd be curious to see the homicide tally of cook county in general. Perhaps some of the decrease in Chicago is offset by increases in certain suburbs.

I wonder if it is the still lowest since 1965 when they add the numbers from the last week of the year. I wonder why they come out with the figures a few days before the years is over.

Two things occurred to me with this news. First, I was stunned to be reminded that in the early '90's there were nearly 1000 murders in Chicago. Those were really some violent years. Second, New York had about as many murders this year as we did, and they have nearly twice the population. Which means the per capita murder rate is less then 1/2 of Chicago's. So, with that perspective, this news really isn't that great.

The changes in New York have been spectacular. I honestly think it's because many street criminals can't afford to live there anymore, however! That's why San Francisco's crime rate is so low.

Actually, NYC has about 3 times the population of Chicago, which makes their homicide count totally stunning.

San Francisco's homicide rate isn't actually that low. They had about 100 homicides this year, for a rate of about 12/100K, lower than Chicago's (about 15/100K), but not by a huge amount.

NYC has taken a very aggressive stance on crime where there are cops basically everywhere all over the streets of which really will make a criminal think twice before committing a crime such as murder.

On the other hand, Chicago is going broke basically where we can't even afford our public transit. We are laying cops off as well as other city workers more and more to lessen our expenses so I am actually surprised that the murder rate has dropped as much as it has in Chicago.

I also would like to point out that Daley has done one very smart but selfish thing and that is he has torn down many of "the hoods" where severe crime was occurring forcing scum bags out of Chicago and into towns such as Harvey, Ford Heights, Chicago Heights, etc. therefore passing off Daley's problems to somebody else so he can take the attitude of, "well they're not my problem anymore" Nicely done Daley, nicely done.

Daley did not do that. The Feds did.

Actually, the CPD did that. One of their key strategies now is to push crime out of the city, period. They don't care where the gangs end up, as long they are out of the city. Hence, the surge in gang activity and crime in the suburbs, especially the inner ring 'burbs.
