Chicago police grapple with spiking violence in the city

Quote:
Hundreds of Chicago police officers will exchange paperwork for foot patrols in an attempt to quell violence that has resulted in a 12.7 percent increase in homicides so far this year.
That 12.7% increase was tabulated before the spasm of violence over the last few days which has left several more dead.

Why is Chicago experiencing such a sharp jump in murder after so many years of steady declines? What can be done to bring this disturbing trend to a halt?

Somehow it seems worse than 12.7%. It is disturbing. Not to state the obvious, but correlation with awful economy is hard to ignore.

Perhaps, but other cities hit by economic woes are seeing steady murder rates, or even modest declines. Philadelphia, for instance.

If it happens year after year, then we can call it a trend. Chicago's murder rate has been plumetting for years. This could just be a temporary spike. It's too early to tell.

I think things are a bit worse this year than last in the District of Columbia as well. Saw something about police officers requiring ID to enter one of the neighborhoods (called Trinidad, perhaps??).

Just to make sure all sides are covered, you all should keep in mind that this is still practically nothing compared to probably all latin american cities and many other cities in the world, where their murders per population is about 10 times this.

Its 90% drug dealing related, 10% spontanous anger (cheating spouse, random street fight, robberry gone violent, etc.)

Dont deal or use drugs, dont cheat on your loved one, dont be brave on the streets, and give up anything a robber wants, and you will be fine in even the most dangerous neighborhoods, which are nothing compared to the rest of the worlds normal neighborhoods.

Thank you, and have a good night.

The people involved in gang shootings - much less anyone who would kill someone for financial gain - are never a part of an economy. They don't hold jobs, and the places where the killings take place are in areas with no businesses (i.e. the south side). To say that these shootings are the result of a foundering economy is false.
