That was cool of you to crunch those numbers. Are you sure the murder count is correct? Oakparkdude and I counted otherwise a few weeks ago. I don't trust the city totals.

This year, so far as of Dec. 13, from what I can gather it is at least 434.

Will we pass last year's total?

I think we will be right around tying it or passing it by 12 or so.
According to the Red Eye spreadsheet I counted 100 as of 4/15,202 as of 6/17,300 as of 8/17,399 as of 11/8,424 as of 11/30,449 total for the year per the Red Eye spreadsheet. So, why is the Police total 435? Something is rotten in Denmark.

"Rotten in Denmark?" We're talking about a disparity of 3% here -- hardly conspiracy material. RedEye counts all homicides, but "homicide" and "murder" are not interchangeable. According to Everyblock, 7 homicides where classified as justifiable in 2010 and 4 were classified as involuntary manslaughter. That accounts for 11 of the 14-count difference between RedEye's homicide count and CPD's murder count.

Well, when the difference is the lowest murder count since 1965 instead of the lowest since 2007, that is a big publicity coup for the city.

It appears as though people don't want the homicide rate to decline in Chicago. Almost as they are rooting for it to top last years and the years before. Strange indeed.

So far the way 2011 is starting, it appears Chicago is up to the challenge of not letting the rate decline again.

And the total will probably much too high for sweeping a dozen or so under the rug to save face.

Its kinda risky to predict the homicide count for 2011 based on 5 days in January.

Never understood why people who have no interest living in Chicago care so much about the crime rate in Chicago.

Because Chicago isn't in a bubble and what affects Chicago can also have an impact on surrounding areas too, either pro or con. Basically Chicago controls the State. There is no Concealed Carry because of Chicago, the State's finances are in disarray, and a large portion can be attributed to Chicago. The list can go on. Chicago crime trends can then also affect the surrounding areas too. Chicago is not it's own microcosm, as much as some Politicians believe they are the center of the universe.

I didn't ask why people are interested in Chicago's politics, I asked about Chicago's crime rate. Apples and oranges. I can see how homicide rates may affect the bordering suburbs like Oak Park or Cicero, but I fail to see how it affects Naperville. Did Chicago's homicide rate in 2010 have an impact on your suburb?
