Historically Uptown has been much quieter the past few years. There have been 4 people shot in uptown in 3 incidents over the past 5 months (not from the CPD, but Uptown Update, which anyone who knows it will tell you isn't "cooking the books" if anyone actually is).

Uptown has actually only had 1 murder in the past 18 months now, last August. Rogers Park has had 8 during that time.

So technically, Uptown's murder rate has only been about 12% that of the city as a whole and 1/3 that of the national aveage

I need to go to the Green Mill I'm ashamed I haven't been there yet.

Is the poetry slam any good?

Depends on who's performing and if you like poetry/spoken word stuff. They also do something called the Paper Machete at 3pm every Saturday. It's a "live magazine" with comedians, journalists, etc doing stuff on pop culture, current events, etc.

He acknowledged his mistake. He was apparently thinking that a couple of shootings resulted in deaths when they didn't. Others are correct in saying that there have been zero homicides in Uptown this year and only one last year.

mjtinmemphis has been one of the better posters in this forum. There are a couple of absolutely hideous trolls on this forum who the mods do nothing about, but he isn't one of them.

I agree that this is the bigger, more concerning threat to Uptown in the future.

I love Green Mill, but haven't been to the poetry slam. I go for the jazz. Some of my favorite establishments in the city are in that area.

Albany Park is also often in the mix for the dubious title of "most violent north side neighborhood of the year". I don't personally find any of these neighborhoods that scary, but still think caution is needed, particularly late at night.

I'd say Rogers Park has been "rougher" than Uptown for two decades now. But Uptown just can't shake it's reputation, which goes back decades longer than Rogers Park's. I think that Uptown's more southern location just north of Lake View puts it a bit more in the media spotlight too. And the hoards of homeless people give it the appearance of being a bad neighborhood, even though it's pretty rare for homeless people to be shooting at each other. They're more likely to expose themselves while pissing on the sidewalk, or to sleep in your vestibule and leave food wrappers.

I agree with most of this. I live on the opposite end of the neighborhood from where you used to but the hordes of homeless are more or less gone up here now that Somerset and Lawrence House have been cleaned up.

IMO the more interesting (if that's the right word) difference between the crime situation in RP versus Uptown is the comparative randomness of it in RP. The Juneway Jungle has its reputation for a reason but even so it's not really a surprise if something serious goes down elsewhere in RP. Whereas when something happens in Uptown it's a safe bet that it happened with 1000 feet of the Wilson/Broadway intersection.
