My license plate expired January of this year. I got a ticket today for having an expired license plate. I had already filled out the forms and paid online to get my license plates renewed (this was on January 21st). I never got the new sticker in the mail. I checked my mail thoroughly for the last week and never saw it. So I called the IL Secretary of State office about the situation and they said I should get it through the mail by next Tuesday (wow, that long?). So anyway, sure enough I haven't gotten the sticker in the mail yet and then I get slapped with the ticket. Will I be able to appeal the ticket given that I already paid these guys way ahead of time? Anyone else on here been through a similar situation? Even if I can get this appealed, it's still frustrating as hell and it really pisses me off.

It is not "an appeal" it is "an affermitive defense" -- you take the stick receipt to court and if the dates match the judge wil likely dismiss th ticket(s)... You might get a cranky judge that will say you shoulda went to the Secretsry of State facility to get a renewal sticker but most judges are not such sticklers...

As always my advice is to appeal in person if you have the time. Bring proof you've paid and did so well in advance of the renewal date, plead that you still haven't received the sticker, and you stand a good chance of having the ticket dismissed.

You should be able to appeal without too much of an issue. In the future though, especially if you are going to buy it online, its best to purchase it as soon as you get the renewal notice in the mail.

The appeal (contesting the ticket) should work. Though, the exact expiration date will be a consideration. The fact that the renewal was submitted online on 1/21 could work against someone whose plate expired, say, on the 21st, 22nd or close to the date. Bottom line is that the State want's its money and if you can demonstrate to a judge that you sent it then an appeal should be successful.

Plates don't expire in the middle of a month. They're good through the last day of the month.

either the online renewal page or the doc that comes in the mail states something to the effect that you can still be ticketed for having expired plates even if you've ordered a new sticker online.
