safety in west loop vs south loop (Chicago: apartment, taxi)

I have the option to live in an apartment right beside County hospital or in the south loop. I work at the hospital, sometimes late at night.

Theapartment is a 10 minute walk from work.

The south loop apartment involve a 5 minute walk, getting the blue line train followed by a
10 minute walk through south loop

I usually go out once or twice a month, when i go out i usually get a train downtown and a taxi home. To get groceries i use a zipcar

Which option is safer?

There are probably nearly equal densities of Chicago Police and private security in south loop AND the Med Center area... Safety should be VERY similar, I would probably give edge to Med Center area as there tend to be a whole lot of people around due to the nature of 24 hr shift coverage, whereas south loop does get a little "ghost town" -ish very late at night / early in AM.
