Hi everyone,

I am new to the Chicago area and will be commuting to the west loop from outside the city via the amtrak. My work will be about a mile from union station. Walking would consist of walking on west Adam st to st Morgans st.

I was just hoping for an overall idea on the safety of the area and if walking isn't a issue. I love to bring my camera to work and enjoy taking photos while walking of the street life. I have quite a nice camera and just want to know if I would be risking it having it out.

Any info regarding this area would be a huge help.

The people pouring off metra trains can be frightening, but otherwise you should be fine.

The general level of development from Union Station through any part of the West Loop that is walkable is quite nice -- lots of newer residential buildings as well as hip conversions of industrial building to office uses.

Safety should not be a concern, the occiasional bum is unlikely to do more than ask if you "got any chaaaaaaaaaaaange"!

Violent young thugs would rather snatch a easily hidden cell phone and have no desire to try to fence a large camera.

As others have said, you'll be fine. Plus, IIRC, most of the high end lenses are serial numbered... at least my experience buying and selling them for fun and profit. I know at least Canon and Nikon have serial numbers...

You'll be as safe as you can be in Chicago. However, that doesn't mean somone isn't going to jump you and take that camera while youre snapping pics.

Well yeah, but you have to put it in the context that you'd be just as likely to have it happen in Chicago as any busy nice area in the country. Or in other words, it would be VERY rare.
