You may find be able to something for $400, but probably more like around $500 for a room. That's probably not including utilities.

Not gonna happen, not even with room mates.

If they rent a studio the size of a closet it might be doable.

It can happen with roommates. Not all areas of the city are filled with $1000 a month or more 3 bedrooms apartments.

Where in the city can you get a 2 bedroom for $600 or a 3 bedroom for less than $900? I'd like to hear recommendations

Default Poor neighborhoods have cheap housing

I used to rent my 2-bedroom unit for $700 per month and my 3-bedroom for $800. This was 3 years ago. They now rent for $800 and $900, respectively.

You can most definitely find cheaper rents a couple of blocks south of me and west of me in Humboldt Park.

It might be tougher to find 2 bed for $600 and 3 bed for $900 with utilities included, but they are out there, albeit in poorer neighborhoods.

None are neighborhoods in which Avengerfire would recommend.

Not to derail too much, but speaking of bad areas of Chicago, I was wondering if it is safe for me to run from my home in Lincoln Square on Foster down Foster to the lakefront and south. I'm aware of the fact I'd be passing through extreme northern Uptown-- a somewhat shifty area (or extreme southern Andersonville/ Edgewater depending on who you ask). I'd be doing this either early in the morning around 5 or 5:30 AM or later in the evening, around 7 in the summertime. If this isn't safe, what's a better long distance running route? I'd be going a maximum of 8 miles in a loop, so 4 miles out and back. Didn't feel this question warranted its own thread so I'm asking here.

On Foster you will pass through or next to Budlong Woods,Bowmanville,Ravenswood,Andersonville, Lakewood Balmoral, Edgewater,Uptown,Margate Park, and Edgewater Beach. The part of Edgewater Beach and Margate Park around Foster between Broadway and Sheridan is kinda sketchy. The other parts of Foster west of Broadway are ok enough.

The major issue will be what streets you take back. I would avoid Lawrence between the lake and Broadway (and even Montrose east of the cemetery) at all costs. If you can do a longer run go down to Irving and then take that west.

And yeah I would say the question did not warrant its own thread!

A biker was recently beaten very badly in the early evening under the LSD overpath on Foster by a group of teens. It is poorly lit over there between Sheridan and LSD. I bike it all the time but you do need to be very aware of your surroundings. The lakefront path can also be sketchy when not highly trafficed.

A better route would be to run the riverfront trail from Argyle @ River Park toward Skokie.
