You can not find that low even in a ghetto. The only place that low would be a transit motel and trust me thoose are not good places to stay.

I'd try the Craigslist "rooms and shares." Either that or look around the neighborhoods you'd consider for flyers and what-not.

For the northside if it gets in the news it is generally rape. I think it might have to do with the college campuses that way and the younger crowd that are a tad less street leary that say someone from the more crime ridden areas. You have many younger less experienced about living in the city people in the area. Plus the well kept lawns and well maintained buildings lull you into a false sense of safety.
For the west and south side it is getting caught in drive by shootings and frankly there is no way to be on the look out about a drive by or someone suddenly pulling a gun and those bullets can travel far and intrude into a house or apartment thru a window.
For the area around UIC there is sometimes the occasional rape, but the university police patrol the area which probably drops crimes in the immediate area down a bit but should one of those students go too far from the nest....trouble. I once was stuck in a hospital emergency room hearing one of them who had just gotten robbed and hit on the head with a bottle complain. Poor guy.
For all around(North south and west) I suspect robbery, but I suspect that college students and younger people make better targets. Downtown might get the occasional robbery but it seems to be more heavily patrolled than most areas of the city.
