The only area I can think of is Downtown Elgin and the area immediately around it. Everything else seems pretty safe to me....

Areas to avoid based on what? Crime? Traffic? Lack of nearby amenities? Poor school ratings?

I guess it would depend on what you find desirable/undesirable. Not everyone cares about schools or walkability of a neighborhood. I think for the most part all of the NW suburbs are nice, but I've heard some not so great things about Elgin as well (secondhand).

I highly doubt there's anywhere I would consider a "no-go zone" in the NW burbs... Maybe I'm wrong but I doubt it.

Carpentersville has some bad parts as does much of Elgin and Hanover Park, Streamwood and Rolling Meadows. Addison has some rough parts west of the expressway and around addison road

In Lake County, Schaumburg is seen as a bad place due to the heavy traffic and density, but crime is not a big issue (except for shoplifting at the mall). Several other suburbs, such as Barrington, Inverness and Hawthorn Woods have high housing prices, but you do get your money's worth. But despite recent incidents in some areas, crime should not be a reason to avoid any of them.

Default NW Burbs

What is NW burbs anymore anyway. People refer to Naperville as NW burbs and also Schaumburg and even further NW.

I agree Elgin and Carpentersville are areas I woudln't want to be. I'm not crazy about Addison either. It's not terrible, there's worse places to live so its not terrible but its getting to be very heavily hispanic, lots of rub n tug massage parlours/prostitution houses all up and down lake street and there's one or two apartment complexes out there that were busted in the past few years where literally the entire complex was involved in a large drug ring.

Part of Elgin, not all. And Carpentersville. You have to watch out for gang areas basically.
