I'm currently in Chicago, but I'm considering a move soon since my lease is about up ($900/month). I want to buy a condo at some point in 2014, so I'm trying to find somewhere cheaper to live so that I can save more. That said, I also would like to have a nice apartment, so I'm thinking suburbs might be a good option. I hear that rent is generally much cheaper (500-600?) and you usually get better quality and more square footage.

Only problem: With the exception of Evanston, it seems that most suburbs don't really offer much to do at night. I'm young, but I don't really need a huge Chicago-style nightlife. A couple of bars and a nice, quaint downtown would be perfect for me. In terms of distance...I commute, so something on the border of Cook County would be fine, or maybe 10-20 miles out of the city max. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Oak Park, Forest Park, Arlington Heights, Naperville, Elmhurst, Downers Grove, Glen Ellyn. While not necessarily targeted to young people, they all have downtown areas with bars and restaurants. Some might be a tad further than twenty miles.

I don't think you're going to find $500 - $600 rents in any towns that have nice downtowns.

Rents in towns with postively scary / dysfunctional downtowns often exceed $500-$600/mo...

We Take Section 8 - Search for apartment for rent, rental home or condo. 300,000+ rentals daily

You're not going to find $500-$600 rents in any building I would be comfortable renting in in/around Arlington heights, Wheeling, Buffalo Grove!

Did you mean 500 less or just 500? You can't rent any thing but a room for 500 unless its a ghetto studio. I doubt the smallest studio on the north side is that cheap.

I rented a studio in within a few blocks away from the green line and downtown/Lake Street in Oak Park for just under $700.

If the OP is willing to look, they can find good deals. But yeah, 500s are a bit low. But one can find a decently spacious studio in these places in the 600s.
