Where in the traffic laws does it say you must stop for 3 seconds?!

THIS IS EXTORTION!!! All the cities hide under the facade of safety---but it is really about revenue! In fact, cities are shortening the yellow light times (risking the safety of others) to increase the number of violations!

I just don't do business in cities that use them. Maybe the RL revenue will replace the sales/property tax revenue when people stop coming to their communities to shop.

Wheeling has theese signs all over town that say a red light camera enforced community. I keep wanting to cross out the enforced and replace it with funded.

Attempts to get rid of red light cameras failed in the Legislature. Only minor regulations, such as not allowing tickets to be issued if you stop over the line, were made. It looks like cities and villages will continue raking in the cash. In fact, just days after the legislation was weakened, more such red-light cameras have been announced.

Red light cameras are a revenue generator plain and simple. They front with a safety issue but it's been statistically proven that very few actually improve saftety but once the $$ start coming in, cities don't want to get rid of it. Schaumburg is the only town to get rid of theirs b/c people threatened to stop going to Woodfield mall.

Personally, you either need to just pay it or ignore it. It's total BS b/c it's a $100 ticket vs. a $75 ticket if given by an officer. If you never plan to come back to Chicago, ignore it. If you do, you might as well bite the bullet and pay it.

Don't bother contesting it. Not worth your time. I would, however, make a point to NEVER go back to the city where you go it from and buy anything. As consumers, the only power we have is to not go back. And be careful next time you make a right on red!!

One last thing, if they can put up all these cameras, why can't they put up a right turn arrow when cross traffic is making their left turns on arrows? In a few intersections, you can do this but most don't have the right turn arrow when they should.

I should probably get off this sore subject but felt I should mention this. Not every town has a cash cow, such as mall or casino. But just about all have traffic signals, and most of those have significant through traffic. In the old days there were speed traps, but that required an actual officer to make a traffic stop. Not very lucrative.

I got nabbed at one in Palatine. Now I just cut through 2 residential streets to avoid the camera rather than make a right turn at it and eventually get nabbed again.

That's exactly what happened to me. I was approaching the intersection and noticed oncoming traffic had a delayed green so I could turn right with no conflict.
