Hi we're a mother and child from the East spending some time in chicago, looking at some colleges. The hotel prices, even in the suburbs, are quite expensive, so we're staying at a bed-and-breakfast in algonquin. we're flying into midway, so we were wondering if the drive is terribly long. Thank you!

If its an option, look into flying into Milwaukee's General Mitchell airport.

Default oh boy!

Wow that is a very, very long drive. i looked it up on mapquest, said it would be about 1 hour and 20 minutes, but i'd thought i'd post about it. doesn't the drive involve heading down a highway towards chicago, then going northwest into the suburbs? thanks.

Default not an option!

the reservations are made, unfortunately. There were very cheap flights. is this going to be something i regret? we're only doing the drive once. i checked its only 50 miles. thats not bad...but i don't see how thats 2 hours. I'm know nothing about chicago traffic, but i'd expect the drive to be 1 1/2 hours.

What day/time is the flight. If it is during rush hour, its an easy 2 hours. Traffic around here is the pits. Heck, its taken me almost 2 hours to drive 30 miles around here sometimes. If you come in early and miss traffic, 1.5 hours sounds about right.

the flight gets in at 8:15, so i'm guessing we'll be on the road by nine AM.

Where in the area are you going to, and when? I have a hard time believing a bed and breakfast in Algonquin is the closest affordable hotel you could find.

Well, you might be ok then. Youll still see a good amount of traffic, but most people are at work by 9am, so the bulk of traffic will be out of the way for you, hopefully. What directions did MapQuest give you? Just curious as to where theyre routing you. If possible, Id try and take I-88 West to Orchard Road, to Randall Rd north. It will probably take a good 45 minutes to an hour from Randall to Algonquin though, but you might skip out on some tolls. Just an idea....

I've driven the Algonquin-Midway route a few times and it's never taken more than 1.5 hours. You do not need to take Randall Rd. It is much too congested and you are going way too far west. The Algonquin (Rose) Bed & Breakfast is on the east side (near the intersection of Rt. 31 and Rt. 62). From the B & B, either take Rt. 31 south to 90 OR Rt. 62 to Rt. 25 to 90. Take 90 to 53 South/290 to get to Midway.

p.s. Next time fly out of O'hare (not Midway and definitely not Mitchell). It's much closer to Algonquin.
