Were the 1982-92 Chevy Camaro's/Pontiac Firebird's good vehicles? (fuel, brakes, valve)

I thought it was a major mistake by not having the standard tranny with the 5.7 motor, I thought the standard tranny/5.7 combo would have an advantage with the power/economy ratio
yeah unless you just have to have a 3rd gen I would skip them and go right for a 4th gen camaro or Trans-am with a LT1 or LS1 and a T-56 6-speed tranny along with the mustang GT they are one of the best bang for the buck cars out there and super easy to mod out and bolt-ons are every where
My 85 Camaro had the 2.8L V6 and was a 5-speed. It was the base model. It ran good, but it had a rod knocking or something. I sold it to my cousin for like $300 in 1996. Structurally, it was a better car than my 1991 Camaro RS that I owned at the same time. It had the 3.1L V6 and the engine/tranny was the only good thing about. It only had 21K when I bought it in September 1995, but come to find out it had been in a severe accident and I didnt know it. We found out later that the person crashed in it had been killed! The lady I bought it from somehow had the title "washed" and it was a clean title. I paid $7500 for that car! I sold it February of 1997 when it had around 35K for $3100 (telling the truth it had been crashed of course and suffered that huge loss of money on it). I was 18, wanted a Camaro and foolishly didnt have the car inspected. Had I done so, I would not have lost around $4000. March 1997, I bought a 1984 Toyota 4wd truck and have owned at least one Japanese car ever since. It was years before I ever even bought another American car.
Were the 1982-92 Chevy Camaro's/Pontiac Firebird's good vehicles? I'm starting to become a big fan of these cars (I prefer the Camaro's styling over the Firebird's) and I consider them to be one of the nicest looking cars of the 1980s/early 1990s
No
I had a 1985 Berlinetta with a carburated sbc. Granted this may not have been a good specimen of the era but looking back there is no way in hell I would ever own another one. They may be good platforms to cut up and make racecars out of but ultimately they were not good in stock form. It was just a bad era....which was an extension of the bad era that started in 1973.
Wow guys, about a year ago I was looking at buying a 1991 Trans Am GTA with the 5.7 in it. It was in excellent condition, and they were asking only $2,900 for it. I thought it was a steal, but after reading this I guess I am glad I did not buy it.
My wife had a 84 firebird and she always says it was the biggest peive of junk she has ever woned right fro the gett go.Nothing but constant problems. The build qauilty she says was very poor and its always had some problem furing the three years she had it.
A 91 Trans AM GTA 5.7 certainly would've been one of the better choices. The thing with a lot of these 3rd gens is that so many have been modified, so one might be better off finding something that has had some mods done professionally.

the 91 had the aero nose which looked pretty good over the squared off version the 91-92 GTA's were pretty rare even more so with the 5.7 under the hood
Never have owned a 3rd gen F body, but I know they're commonly associated stereotyped as being driven by those who wear mullets and live in trailer parks.
Fairly accurate stereotype too... I would add that American Racing rims are a common modification for such owners..
In the NE the guidos get a hold of the white IROCs, tint the windows black and put a "italia" or italian flag stickers all over the rear.
