Hi everyone...to anyone who lives in Charlotte...what are you thoughts on a dog walking service, how much would someone be able to charge, etc.? I'm starting to look into the possiblity of opening up a dog walking business, professional/bonded etc. Thoughts? Thanks!

A woman I used to work with has her own. This is a dog loving city with doggie day cares, dog parks, a dog cafe, even a dog bar...the market is here. Go for it.

I like the idea. People are really into their dogs here. If you plan it right and market yourself correctly I think you could do very well. Do some research you have the internet at your finger tips. Look up some dog walking services and see how much they are charging. Dog walking is a very big thing in NYC. Research some of those companies. Good Luck keep us posted. You could probably do well at Birkdale

I have never lived in such a place as this and seen so many people that treat their dogs like people. I love to see that. The market is here for sure.

It's a go..

We used one once while on vacation. Great service, friendly people, loved dogs(big plus, lol). Fairly cheap peace of mind for our little maltese.

They gave us a few ink pens with their company name printed on them. They are still in a drawer somewhere around here!

Haha, Jennifer (owner of Carolinas Critter Sitters) is my petsitter! She is great, by the way.

The only downside I would see to petsitting/walking is that your holidays and weekends are pretty much gone because this is when you would be in high demand. But if you are OK with that, go for it. Best of luck, it does sound like a fun way to make a living.

I am a petsitter, though not in NC (yet). With the way Charlotte is growing, I'd say it's an excellent time. Takes a little while to make enough to go full-time, and as was posted above, you do work a lot of nights and weekends, especially during holidays. However, I have geared my business so that most of my sits are for busy professionals who are gone long hours, so I come in mid-days and give their dogs a walk and potty break. I do a lot of weekend and vacation petsits, but a lot of the time my weekends are free, which is important to me as I have my own dogs that I train and compete with. Your rates should start at somewhere around $17 and go up from there, depending on what other sitters in the area charge. You'd definitely want to join Petsitters International, and through them you'd be able to get bonded and insured -- an absolute must! It would also be good to join a local petsitting group for networking, backup, chat, help and referring each other. Go to petsit.com and find out a lot more. Also buy Patti Moran's book "Petsitting For Profit." Good luck!!
