How is Charlotte and the surrounding towns as far as having bike lanes? Are there a lot of roads and streets with bike lanes? How about off road trails and greenbelts for bikers, joggers, etc?

Here is a list of the greenways that are good for walking/running. Most of them are not setup for true cycling and are rather meant for a casual ride.
Park and Rec Greenways

There are some bike lanes but most abrubtley end and are not well thought out. There is some effort to fix this but Charlotte is not really a biking friendly city. We do have the Booty Loop though which is a fun ride near uptown and lance armstrong has a riding event there every year:

There aren't a whole lot of places with dedicated bike lanes. Below are some links to biking resources in Charlotte:

Charlotte Area Bicycle Alliance (CABA)

BikeCharlotte.com - Your Local Biking Resource

You might also check Do something, Learn something, Share something, Change something - Meetup for biking groups in Charlotte. They would have a lot more info.

Charlotte has some great single track stuff. Check out tarheeltrailblazers.com for some good info.

There are places like the "booty loop" that are bike friendly, but by and large you have to exercise extreme caution on surface streets. You'll see from the attitude displayed on threads like this that there are some very angry drivers who hold bikers in poor regard.

As well as bicyclists who don't give a damn about the law nor pedestrians walking on the greenway.

I'm sure you are not one of those, though.

Example #1. Sure there will be more to follow. After all, cyclists kill/maim so many people due to their callous disregard, right?

Bike lanes aren't the best from what I am seeing. Look for some local riding groups to see where they go. There are a handful of group rides around town and you can get some good ideas for routes from them. But it all depends on what type of riding you plan to do.
