Does anyone know who is responsible for installation or maintenance of bike lanes? Is it the city, county, or state?

Are bike lanes a slow development part of a master plan?
For instance they will be in one location and not in another. Are they waiting til that road needs to be resurface to make them complete?

Right now the state of the bike lanes are a joke due to their layout and condition. I just saw a new one install and it only goes from one stop light to another. Most have no signs warning the biker that the lane is going to end and if you got some speed going it makes for a dicey situation.

Some I cross are filled with debri, trash, gravel, and some even have gutters for a bike tire to get caught in.

How does one find out who responsible for developing bike lanes?

For all those who read this please be courteous when you pass bikers , if you can move over please do so because we sometimes have to swirve to miss road obstacles any extra room is greatly appreciated.

Great question. I'm not a cyclist myself but will do what I can to share the road.

As for repairs/maintenance, I think it depends on which agency is responsible for a road.

Here's a link on something about a bicycle improvement plan.

Believe it or not, it is a 100% improvement over 7 years ago when there were little to no bike lanes in Charlotte whatsoever. The city passed a bond (only $2 million) in 2000 and the city hired a bike program manager. That money only helped create 14 miles of marked bike lanes. It was a start though.

The city has been the one responsible for implementing the bike lanes and paths. In the past, bike paths and sidewalks are always the first proposed elimintation from city budgets (Republicans proposed cutting $10 million that would pay for bike paths and sidewalks along the light rail lines a few years back).

Bottom line: if you want to contact someone about bike paths, contact the city....they are doing the planning.

Ok thank you. It good to know they are part of a main plan of the future. I can see why bike paths are costly but it got to be cheaper than laying out sidewalks since cement costs more.
Where bike lanes just involve widening the road to include them.

Thanks for letting me know who to contact because least for now there needs to be warning lane going to end so that someone can adjust there speed. Also I wanted to contact someone about the debri in the lanes.
