Every so often I see a car just cruising past all the traffic on Independence by using the bus lane. Is there some secret thing I don't know about that gives these people permission to use it, or are they just taking the risk and hoping to not get caught? I almost want to try it and see what happens.

I've made a foray down the bus lane before. By "accident", of course.

If the cops catch you there's no getting out of the ticket though.

Ha, I've seen it happen a few times as well.

They should really open up those lanes, if not as HOV/HOT lanes. They seem to only get used by the buses during the early morning, or late afternoon. Sometimes an ambulance or police car, every once in awhile.

Way back when those lanes opened I read that less than 100 vehicles use it daily. That's approximately a zillion bucks we spent for each of thsoe vehicles to drive a mile or two, give or take a few buckets of money.

Originally it was planned as a reversible HOV lanes when Independence was a regular 6 lane boulevard from Uptown to Eastway, but it was deemed too short to be used as a HOV system, so it became a busway instead. However with the current construction and possible Monroe Bypass in the near future, it may be converted to a HOT/HOV system.

I've always assumed the unmarked cars were either cops or maybe CATS officials that were allowed to use it when travelling for business. I'm sure there are some scofflaws that make use of it, though.

I could definitely understand people going in there by accident. I feel like the signage could probably be a little more obvious, isn't it mainly just some worn-out paint on the road saying buses only?

I thought so! Everything hinges on when Monroe Bypass eventually gets built before those bus lanes changes over to HOT lanes!
