Why don't you come to Charleston, do a longer term room rental at the Best Western or Fairfield Inn. They are only a couple of blocks from the baseball park in one direction and the Embassy Suites sports bar to the west a few blocks and close to Pies&Pints & Aledphia Sports Bar on Capitol St. Take a few weeks to decide where you want to live.
Most WV tax rates are set by the state, so they are about the same all over. On top of that, Charleston charges each person working in the city $2.00 per week for the privilege of coming to work there.
It is small compared to the tech industry in Morgantown-Clarksburg.
I'm a long time resident of Morgantown/Fairmont (recently moved to Charleston). The high-tech corridor IS Morgantown, Fairmont (often forgotten about but a lot going on), and Clarksburg/Bridgeport. My observation so far is that Charleston pales in comparision. I work in the industry.

In the scheme of things the tech industry is small in NCWV but morgantoen to Clarksburg is where most of it in WV is located. It is many times bigger than Charleston, which is a government town with a little industry. it is why NCWV is doing so good because it embraces STEM and knowledge economy.
What are the names of all of these tech companies in West Virginia's 'tech corridor?' I know that has been a designation that the Clarksburg area has used ever since the FBI fingerprinting facility set up shop there in the 1990s (it used to be called 'Software Valley') but I am not aware of any large scale technology operations in the area. I'll admit it probably has the highest concentration in West Virginia but that isn't saying much..
Lockheed Martin and Northrup Grumman both have a large presence in the Farimont area along with numerous other software/IT/support services companies that work supporting government entities located along I-79 such as NETL, other DOE facilities, NASA, FBI, NOAA, etc. (all mentioned previously).
Charleston does not come close to Columbus -Cbus is huge, but Canton?? You ever been there? ever been to Charleston? Canton hardly comes close to Charleston, but Canton is huge compared to the village of Morgantown.
Charleston is fine. They have a good nightlife there. However, it does not offer as much as either Canton or Morgantown in that regard. It is comparitively quite after working hours, but they have a handfull of good bars. I would say if you choose the right downtown area in which to live you would be happy. If you choose the wrong one, you will be looking for an exit fast. Personally, I'd take Silk's advice on this one if I were you.
