Obviously a big drag. I have an upgrade in the next 2 weeks so I am still undecided about what I will do. The phone I want isn't out yet but in order to keep unlimited for another 2 years(and my 20% employee discount) I will have to upgrade soon.
I only really use 100-500 mb a year but looking at the other plans even the smallest plan is $30 a month with no employee discount so I would still be paying more for less data.
In the future, I definitely don't use enough data to justify paying $700 for a cellphone(almost 3 times as much as my laptop-which is fairly well equipped). So it's either suck it up with the tiered data or look at other carriers.
I have to say it may not make much sense to stay on as an individual user for Verizon in the future.
I'm still under the unlimited data. I'm hoping to keep it as long as possible. They did away with the 250-500 text message plan. Now it's only 1000 or unlimited. I preferred the 250 because I didn't text that much.

Take a look at other provider plans. Some resell Verizon, some Sprint, etc. You can use your home WiFi rather than Network for data. Or as a frequent poster has pointed out, with a little effort you can refuse a data plan.
So, let your current plan expire and move to another service. Some will port your current CDMA device.

IMO it's kind of silly to cancel if you're using so little data. Upgrade during one of their double data promos and you can get 4GB of 4G LTE for $30/mo. LTE blows 3G out of the water. I have a Verizon LTE iPad and it's like having a cable modem connection wherever I go.
Dumb move.
When they grandfathered people into unlimited data last year I thought that was brilliant marketing. Way to lock in customers FOR LIFE. I have unlimited and resigned myself to the fact that I would have VZW forever.
Now? I will shop around every time my contract is up.

Same here. We have 4 smartphones on our grandfathered plan.

Even though I don't like it, I don't believe it's a dumb move. Look at all the issues that ATT had with the iphone when they have unlimited data. The people who are most likely shopping are those who use alot of data and who they aren't making as much money on(or aren't making any at all).
I would shop regardless of any changes they made. I don't have any loyalty to my cellphone company and I don't expect any back.
