Does best coverage and bigger network mean better? I think not. Look at Walmart, they certainly aren't the best... just the biggest. I think people should stop focusing on user base and coverage spread, and focus on customer service, coverage quality, features, prices, etc.

"I am in that orange AT@T area and found verizon to have less droped calls" - texdav

Be that as it may,

"Global Wireless Solutions Inc., compiles wireless performance across 950,000 road miles, covering 400 U.S. markets that represent 88 percent of the country's population, tests also found that 98.59 percent of voice calls on AT&T's network were completed without interruption, meaning the second-best dropped call average (behind Verizon by only one-tenth of a percentage point) in the nation."

Elaborate? I'll keep it simple because apparently I have to. People were porting out to AT&T because of the IPhone and the exclusive rights. Now that Verizon has it, no one wants to stay with AT&T's inferior network. By the way if you read the bottom of the screen based on AT&T's 97% claim, it tells you about roaming. Their network doesn't cover 97% (probably more like 25% based on their TRUE network meaning AT&T and Cingular towers) and if you check all the major carriers with roaming included, I bet all are about 85% or more.T-Mobile is probably the least but Sprint and Verizon have MUCH BETTER coverage than AT&T. So, now people will be porting out of AT&T to go to Verizon. Why wouldn't you go to a carrier that has much better coverage and signal strength and customer service at the same price?

"Elaborate? I'll keep it simple because apparently I have to" - Lancet71

Sarcasm....Now we're talking..

"based on AT&T's 97% claim, it tells you about roaming." - Lancet71

True, it does say based on Licensed and roaming areas.

"Their network doesn't cover 97%" - Lancet71

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) is the world's most popular wireless phone technology. It's used by more than one billion people around the world.

GSM offers unparalleled global roaming capabilities, as well as the truest voice quality in wireless. Its easy-to-use data capabilities offer service up to the fastest wireless broadband service currently possible. There are several technologies that companies use to provide wireless services. While there may never be one standard technology worldwide, GSM is now used in 219 countries and territories serving more than three billion people and providing travelers with access to mobile services wherever they go.
HSPA+
When combined with enhanced backhaul, our HSPA+ technology is expected to deliver speeds up to 4x faster than ordinary mobile broadband.
HSPA
Enhancement of UMTS with HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access) moves GSM into the range of true broadband service.
UMTS
UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephone Service) is the next level of service. It is the leading 3G technology choice today, offering potential worldwide coverage. UMTS enables vertical-specific devices (an X-ray viewer, for example), video and music on-demand, digital TV and radio, and services such as home or business security video monitoring.
EDGE
Further enhancements in data capability over the GSM network are provided with EDGE service (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution). EDGE is especially important to business users as it permits mobile access to corporate applications at speeds far in excess of dialup. True wireless broadband service is being deployed in both GSM and CDMA worlds, but AT&T's existing nationwide offering of EDGE/Wi-Fi service makes corporate users truly mobile using either a wireless-enabled Windows Mobile® device, or any of a host of other new devices.
GPRS
GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is the first level of data service on GSM. This packet-based service utilizes the GSM Radio Access Network, combined with a core network dedicated to data. GPRS allows nationwide text and email service and basic WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) Internet browsing. GPRS is the service of choice for many quick messaging phones and smartphones.

AT&T offers a nationwide GSM/GPRS footprint across 100 percent of our service area, which is 97% of All Americans.

"Why wouldn't you go to a carrier that has much better coverage" - Lancet71

My sentiments exactly.....

AT&T was named the "Best Mobile Coverage in the World"

Leading global footprint. AT&T customers can make and receive calls in more than 220 countries and send e-mail and browse the Internet in more than 200 countries, including more than 130 countries with 3G coverage. AT&T also offers voice and data coverage on more than 135 major cruise ships.

"Verizon have MUCH BETTER coverage than AT&T." -Lancet71

* 3G is defined by the ITU as any wireless cell based protocol that delivers broadband speed. The defined threshold for that is at least 250kbps .

* Verizon's standard of "3G" is NOT the same as AT&T's standard of "3G".

* Verizon actually labels its entire data network (that tops at 1.4Mbit) as “3G”. AT&T only does so for the Higher End of its network, that allows speeds up to 3.6Mbit.

So, since Verizon labels it's entire network as "3G"...And AT&T labels the Higher Ends of it's network as "3G"..Then you have this....

http://static.myce.com/images_posts/...on_att_map.png

But if it was an apples to apples comparison, by strict definition, in which case AT&T had the same "3G" standard as Verizon, labeling it's entire network as "3G", because both EDGE and HSPA qualify as "3G" ..Then you will have this.

"T-Mobile is probably the least but Sprint and Verizon have MUCH BETTER coverage than AT&T" - Lancet71

Sprint is the other CDMA network with a "3G" standard like Verizon.
See above for the breakdown of "3G Coverage".^

***This is not to say that Verizon or Sprint's 3G coverage maps are wrong, because they are not, they are just misleading.

IME, Verizon is better in rural areas (in NC thisis chiefly b/c they bought up the best carrier for the area -Alltell) and the largest cities (i.e. NY, San Fran) AT&T is better everywhere in between.
