My senior cat stopped eating and drinking. She was very lethargic. I read the posts here and thought the worst. I called the vet and got her in immediately. They found an abscess in her mouth, which I obviously couldn't see. They sedated her, gave her pain medication and antibiotics and she was eating and drinking again within a day. Best advice is just take your pet to the vet.

My sister's cat had the same thing and lived several more years. So when our cats had trouble, that is what I hoped for. They could not be sure with either cat that dental problems were the only issue, but thought it could be. With the first, they discovered an oral cancer during the surgery and put him down. With the second, they completed the surgery, and she went through a couple weeks of pain post-surgery. Then the oral cancer became apparent and we had her put down.
Now we have one senior and two younger cats. The senior was feral her first year, but has now been a housecat for 15 years. However, vet visits (or any car trip, or being handled by a stranger, or being constrained by anyone but me) are terrifying for her. In her case, we don't plan to take her to the vet. For her, it would not be kind. It's possible that something could change our minds, but we do hope she can die at home.

About a year ago, my ex wife took her cat (that we got together in 1998) to the vet because she would not eat or drink. The vet gave the cat a shot (I don't know what it was) and it immediately began eating and drinking again. Jade lived almost another year before she suddenly went down hill and was put to sleep.
Always, seek a vet's advice (and a 2nd opinion doesn't hurt).

I take it you are from the USA, if not there are similar organisations in many countries.
