Let's end the stupid "Cali" comments and let people BE.
Or you can babble endlessly about it on this stupid thread about "Cali".

Well aren't we the serious one! He is not from California but he hopes to be. The same can be said for me and Colorado and I certainly didn't think it an insult or babble when somebody tried to teach me something about her state, of which, by the way, I learned the correct lingo on city data myself. Have you had a bad week? Lighten up, there is no harm intended here.

My wife is from Palmdale originally and wants to move back but north from there like Fresno, Sacramento, Bakersfield. I'm trying to just go only like no more than 3 hours north of palmdale so she can still visit her paretns in palmdale and vice versa. Were jut looking got a place that she can find a job and it be a safe place for my kid to ride his bike around.
Those 3 areas are going to have a lot of pollen for your child because they have a lot of crops. There are lots of unemployed people in California so (as a previous poster mentioned), if you also rely on your wife's salary to make ends meet, it might be good to scout out a job before you move.

If you are able to work from home but still want to be a fair distance away from Palmdale, how about somewhere near Ventura or the Pismo Beach area? In years past, Pismo was a foggy retirement community, but not so anymore. The area has really grown and there are lots of families there now. These areas are cooler, too.

Bishop would be a good place to raise a child. They have horses if you are interested in something like that (lots of Future Farmers of America kids and rodeo events), and it's on the way to Mammoth if you like to ski.

And no harm back at ya but the endless "cali" comments are really tiresome.

O.P. ... it's none of my business and this is unsolicited advice but if you have a child who already has a compromised immune system, you might want to consider living in a community where the air is clean.

Well, I work in the tech biz here in Monterey. Our kids love the area and the air is clean. But I just did a quick lookup for pollen forecast on weather.com and it looks pretty high throughout the state. It is Springtime, so I don't know where you could go with low pollen count especially this time of the - maybe Death Valley?

Pollen comes mainly from trees and grasses. So most nice places in California will have some pollen. But I guess places with less farms, trees, grass and open spaces would at least seem to have less pollen. Maybe somewhere in the LA Orange County areas. Here is the city of Orange which looks pretty good (with regards to pollen): Orange Allergens. Here are Fresno's Allergens. And here are Sacramento's Allergens.

Since overall air quality is worse in the Central Valley it might not be the best choice for your son - Central Valley.

But here are some problems with your requirements. 3 hours north of Palmdale - your only major cities are Fresno and Bakersfield. Sacramento is 6+ hours for example. And San Jose is ~5.5. You need to go south to find more tech jobs within that radius or much further north. That is unless Fresno works out. We actually like that area except for the air quality. But because of existing family medical concerns it may not be your best choice.

I would recommend doing more online research and talk to your allergist as well.

If you can swing the tech job thing, places like Ventura, and Camarillo in SoCal. Or for Central Cal possibly San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, Monterey, etc...

If you expand your drive distance to the north other options become available.

Interesting eHow Article -

Quote:
Ideal Living Conditions for Asthmatics

In the United States, there are numerous cities with ideal living conditions for people with asthma. The environmental triggers are low, and the weather conditions are stable. These locations generally have a low pollen count or short pollen season, good outdoor air quality, a low number of ozone days and city laws that ban smoking in public places.

Coastal cities are best for asthmatics because the ocean breeze blows away pollutants, pollen and other irritants. People with asthma also tend to do better in areas that have mild climates with little humidity or extreme weather temperatures.

California

Several cities in California are among the top U.S. metropolitan cities recognized as the best places to live for asthmatics. Orange County, with its steady mild temperatures, has low pollen levels and few people who smoke because of its tough no smoking laws.

Both San Diego and San Jose are ideal cities for people with asthma. Both have a mild climate and strict public smoking laws, while San Diego also has low pollen levels. San Francisco and Los Angeles-Long Beach also offer asthmatics a near perfect climate and low pollen counts.

We would love to move up as north as possible except my son has sever alaergies to Tree pollen. We honestly dont care how far north we go as far as we can find a good/safe place to live, jobs (mainly for the wife) and decent pollen index, Lower than where we live now Virginia. We relocated here from florida 4 months ago but were not aware of his allergies and how bad it got here.

Well, the Bay area seems to be well regarded as good place to live for alergy sufferers. Although its a very large region which encompasses the South Bay including San Jose. So your best bet would be to contact an allegist in the Bay Area for local subject matter expertise. Closer to the coast looks better. Here is another interesting article:

Quote:
Places to Live With Low Allergies

Many allergy sufferers find that a change of location to a place in which there is less airborne grass, tree and weed pollen, as well as fewer mold spores, will offer an immense improvement in their quality of life. These places should also be low in pollution, which can exacerbate allergies. Findings show that while no part of the United States is allergen free, there are places in which allergy sufferers should fare better than they do in others.

Bay Area, California

The Bay Area, the ring of communities surrounding San Francisco, has several advantages that make it a haven for allergy sufferers. Its coastal location allows many allergens to be blown out to sea, while the vegetation is relatively low in pollen. In addition, the famously eco-conscious community has relatively little pollution, but does boast a high number of allergy specialists. Variations in conditions exist among communities, with the more inland areas, such as Concord and Walnut Creek, receiving significantly more allergens than cities along the coast, such as San Francisco and Sausalito.

Coastal breezes blow a lot of the junk out of the air faster. So I would look in the Bay Area possibly closer to the coast.

Are you opposed to SoCal locations like Ventura which would be closer to family? There are decent places for families in LA and OC Counties as well. You just have to know where to look - mainly along the coast there as well.

** Edit: The key is to do a lot more research this time. Get multiple sources of information including professionals. The reason I say this is because although the Bay Area is said to be a good general place I know many surrounding town with a lot of trees. And places like the SV don't get as much of a coastal breeze. On top of that in checking the weather.com Pollen index SF actually looks High right now: http://www.weather.com/outlook/healt...ather/USCA0987. So bottom line - do your homework first.

Here is one of the best places I've found so far in the nation: Portland Oregon.

That is really far north from Palmdale. But what a beautiful city. We almost moved there ourselves. They have the Silcon Forest there with some decent high tech work. You can find in more in Seattle. But that is even further north.

And a comparative look at the nation: http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/weathermaps?map=overall

It really depends on what your kid is allergic to. California is generally moderate when it comes to environment allergens, but depending on the type of pollen and the seasonality, some areas are worse than others. Finding the best area in California for allergy sufferers is akin to asking what is the best city to live in California.

My suggestion would be to visit Weather.com page and do a forecast of pollen count in the zip code area you're interested in. You can do so by visiting here: Seasonal Allergies, Allergy Relief, Pollen Forecast - weather.com

Then click on the link that says "See past pollen count for _________ ."

At the bottom of the calendar, you should be able to see a table that resembles much like this:

Season Onset Peak End
Tree Early-January Late-January Mid-July
Grass Late-January Late-May Early-November
Weed Mid-February Mid-July Mid-November

I hope this will help you with your decision-making.

Its seems to be mostly Trees which sucks cause i love wooded areas. The coastal areas dose make sense being we lived in Florida pretty much all 10 years of his life and he was so good we didn't even know he had allergies until we made the mistake to moving to Virginia. Now i really don't want to go back to Florida and I have been trying to convince the wife for years to move to California and finally we are. We love the people, scenery, lifestyle.
