Hi,

My husband and I are thinking about relocating to California... He's from So.Cal (San Bernardino Mts) and I was raised in Kenai, Alaska. So we're looking for an area that will be mutually enjoyable. We really liked Pleasanton but the housing prices are outrageous. I want an area that has seasons (roughly 30's to 80's), is family friendly (we have one son), lots of history and is pedestrian friendly.

Any ideas? I really disliked LA, to hot, to many people, to much traffic, etc. He would love to go back to LA for the hustle & bustle of the city & warm weather. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The city of Tehachapi has just what you're looking for. Do a Google search on it! I'm betting you'd be wonderfully happy there!

Is it in the desert or mountains? Tehchapi seems to have several communities - unless I'm looking at the wrong stuff.

Tehachapi is located in the gorgeous moutians, 40 miles East of Bakersfield. Nothing but oaks and pines. Snows in the winter, but not enough to stick around or inconvienience you; mild summers. Average price for a home is in the mid $200,000. You get a decent size house and a great size lot/ acreage. Wouldn't waste my time looking in the areas they call Stallion Springs or Bear Valley Springs, as both of those places are 10-15 miles from town (we're talking a good 30 minute one-way ride for an ambulance to get to you, should you have an emergency). Bear Valley is a gated community, all that means is people with the same income as almost everyone else, but they feel the need for a HOA and to pay an extra amount every month to be told what color to paint their house, etc.
I wouldn't live inside the city limits. I'd look into the areas reffered to as West Golden Hills, Oak Knolls or "county".
Tehachapi is Indian for the "Land of Four Seasons/ Land of Many Oaks". They really do get all four seasons (the running joke is, sometimes you get them all in one day). It's also located in Kern County. Much better than LA County.
Here's their local paper..... www.tehachapinews.com
